3 Ways to Lighten Your Mental Load

As summer winds down and school schedules return, life tends to fill up fast. Between work, drop-offs, practices, errands, and everything else competing for your attention, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly trying to catch up.

The good news? You don’t have to overhaul your entire routine to feel more in control. Sometimes the just one small act can create a big sense of relief. Here are three different techniques for making that to-do list feel less chaotic and more manageable:

Clear One Visible Space
When our surroundings feel cluttered, our brains interpret it as another unfinished task demanding attention, or a reminder of everything that still hasn’t been taken care of. That’s why a messy kitchen counter, overflowing desk, or dirty car can make you feel more overwhelmed than you actually are. Small acts—folding the blankets on the couch, running your car through the wash, or clearing off a counter or table, for example—help create visual calm, making it easier for your mind to focus and helping you feel more in control and capable of tackling those larger tasks.

Decide Less
The reason making decisions can feel so exhausting is that for every conscious choice you make, you’re brain has made roughly 300 decisions already subconsciously. That’s an average of 35,000 choices every single day. Take a moment to consider ways to reduce the number of conscious decisions you’re having to make. Instead of planning a meal just for tonight, can you decide on breakfast tomorrow at the same time? Or maybe while you’re putting away laundry you set aside the clothes to wear the next day. Removing even a handful of daily decisions frees up more energy for the things that deserve your attention.

Celebrate “Done” More Often
Many of us jump straight from one task to the next without acknowledging what we’ve already accomplished. By the end of the day, it can feel like you didn’t get enough done—even when you actually accomplished quite a bit. Take a moment to name everything that was accomplished. The lunches are packed. The car has been vacuumed out. Tomorrow’s breakfast is already in the slow cooker. Those aren’t insignificant tasks—they’re the little things that keep life moving forward.

Back-to-school season will always be busy, but busy doesn’t have to mean overwhelmed. A few intentional habits can help you feel more organized, more capable, and a little more prepared for whatever the day brings. Sometimes the biggest difference comes from doing one small thing that makes everything else feel just a little bit lighter.
